Krasnoyarsk will host 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships
The host cities of 2021 Junior Wrestling World Championships and 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships were determined at the United World Wresting Bureau meeting in Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan). The Russian Federation was on the winning side - the events will take place in Ufa and Krasnoyarsk.
After considering a bid, the UWW members voted for holding 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships in a Siberian city. The strengths of Krasnoyarsk include the outstanding traditions in Wrestling and modern infrastructure, which appeared in the city thanks to the Universiade.
Competitions in Greco-Roman, Women's and Freestyle Wrestling will be held in 2022 at Platinum Arena Ice Arena, the venue, that hosted Figure Skating competitions, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies as part of the Winter Universiade 2019 in March.
“I have a triple holiday today,” commented Natalya Yarygina, Vice President of the UWW, First Vice President of the Russian Wrestling Federation, to the press service of the Russian Wrestling Federation. “The victory of Krasnoyarsk, the victory of Bashkiria, as well as the birthday of my daughter (smiles). The rich wrestling traditions of Krasnoyarsk are known all over the world. I am glad that we were supported by all the members of the United World Wresting Bureau - and now we are renewing our efforts to organize 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships. We hold annual Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Senior International Tournament, but the World Championship is an event of a much larger scale. Krasnoyarsk hosted the World Championship once before and after that, for many years, the organizers looked up to us. We will do our best to ensure that 2022 Senior Wrestling World Championships in Krasnoyarsk will set the bar high! "
Mikhail Mamiashvili, Vice President of the UWW, President of the Russian Wrestling Federation emphasized: "The annual Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Senior International Tournament, successful Winter Universiade 2019 – Krasnoyarsk can host any event of the high level."
It is worth reminding that Krasnoyarsk has already hosted the World Wrestling Championships in 1997. It became the first tournament of such a level in this sport in the new history of Russia. The combined World Championships in Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Women's Wrestling have been held since 2005. Previously the World Wrestling Championships took place in 2010 in Moscow.
It should be noted, that the Krasnoyarsk Territory has strong wrestling traditions. Ivan Yarygin’s gold medal in Freestyle Wrestling was the first for Krasnoyarsk at the Olympics in 1972. Since then, wrestlers of the Krasnoyarsk Territory have won 10 gold and 4 bronze Olympic medals. The trademark of the region, since 1991, is Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Senior International Tournament. In 2007, Krasnoyarsk hosted Women's Wrestling and Freestyle World Cup.
